South Pacific Destroyer: The Battle for the Solomons from Savo Island to the Vella Gulf

I just finished listening to the audio book "South Pacific Destroyer: The Battle for the Solomons from Savo Island to the Vella Gulf" authored by Russell Crenshaw. Mr. Crenshaw started as gunnery officer and eventually became executive officer of the USS Maury (DD-401). Maury was a pre world war II destroyer of the Gridley class. Here is USS Maury's page on Wikipedia.

The book covers the campaign from the Battle of Tassafaronga in Nov 1942 to Vella Gulf in August 1943. The most interesting part of the book for me was the difficulties U.S. Army troops had capturing the island of Munda and the ineffectiveness of U.S. weapons (torpedo's and guns), and the effectiveness of the Japanese Type 93 torpedo.  Another area that is interesting is the use of local line-of-site radio communications between ships and how the "Combat Information Center" concept was adapted to pre-war destroyers. The crew of Maury constructed a CIC in the warzone.
